Our Cherry season begins in early December and goes through until approximately late January. Our Stonefruit season begins in early Jan and goes through until approximately late February / Early March. We require seasonal workers over our fruit season. Thinning generally starts in October but only lasts a few weeks. Picking is usually from late November onward until the harvest is completed late February/March. Retail workers are required throughout the entire year, however we hire a much larger team over the summer period.
While we employ the majority of our staff for picking, there are also jobs available for retail and packing.
Picking Job Description:
Pickers pick fruit directly into a bucket / bag using a harness that holds approximately 5kg of fruit. All stonefruit except cherries are emptied into a bin. This process is repeated until entire blocks are picked at the instruction of the manager and or team leader. They will give you direction on what needs picking first. Picking will either be from a cherry picker, hydra ladder or from the ground level – so you need to be comfortable using this equipment and working from height.
No experience is required (but it is preferred).
We will train you to ensure you pick fruit both that is ready to pick, and to prevent damage, and ensure you are using the most efficient picking methods.
Payment & Hours:
Payment is hourly based with performance bonuses.
Work generally starts at 7.00am and daily hours are generally 8-9 hours although work can be interrupted by wet weather. Sometimes, more hours are required if we are under time pressure to get fruit off the tree. You will be required to work additional hours when we are faced with time stressors.
Key Requirements:
As the role is physical a good level of fitness is required. It is important that staff have a level of self-motivation, and a positive and friendly attitude. You also need to have a level of comfort working outdoors in both cold morning, and hot afternoon conditions. This is a 7 day a week business, so availability is important to ensure the fruit gets picked when it needs to get off the tree.
